Hermon softball knocks off Ellsworth advances to the regional finals

ELLSWORTH – The #6 Hermon Hawks softball team being on a roll is putting it mildly. On Friday, they eliminated #3 MDI in extra innings, and turned around Saturday and knocked off #2 Ellsworth 4-3.

Hermon's Molly Simcox started the game at catcher, went to third base in the second, singled in what would become the winning run in the second as well. Another outstanding game for Simcox. (Photo by Ron Hawkes/MSR)

Next up will be #8 Winslow who has been on a roll themselves, eliminating #5 Lawrence and #1 Nokomis. The Regional Final game is scheduled for June 14 at Brewer High School for an 8 p.m. game. The winner of the Regional will face either #1 York or #2 Gardiner from the south division for the Class B State Softball Championship.

Saturday in Ellsworth the Hawks got a big blast from Lyndsee Reed in the first inning and six innings of unbelievable relief pitching from Katie Fowler.

In the top of the first Reed smacked a two-run homer over the centerfield fence scoring Molly Simcox, who was hit by a pitch on the first pitch of the game, to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Ellsworth answered right back in the bottom of the first scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the second an Ava Dean single and a Braelynn Wilcox double put runners on second and third. Simcox then singled, scoring both to make it 4-3.

That was all Fowler needed as she then shut the door on Ellsworth and pitched her way to a playoff win for Hermon.

Reed started in the circle for Hermon. After an eight inning performance Friday against MDI Reed just did not have much left in the tank. She allowed three runs, one earned, on one hit and a walk. She had one strikeout.

Hermon brought in freshman Katie Fowler to pitch in the second inning and once she went to work it was over for Ellsworth. Fowler went six scoreless innings allowing two hits and walking two while striking out seven. Fowler threw 84 pitches in the game, 60 of them for strikes.

Tyler Hellum went the distance for Ellsworth in the circle allowing four runs on nine hits with no walks. She struck out four and gave up one home run.

At the plate for Hermon, Simcox (single, run, 2 RBIs); Fowler (single); Reed (HR, single, run, 2 RBIs); Faith Coombs (2 singles); Dean (single, run); and Wilcox (2 doubles, run).

For Ellsworth, Jayden Sullivan (single, run, RBI); Alicia Havey (single)Hannah Wagstaff (single); Aaliyah Manning and Sophie Lynch each had a run scored.
